Tesla ownership has many perks that are sometimes lacking in traditional car brands. One of the more convenient aspects of having a Tesla is that you have options for different keys for the car. Whether it’s a phone key, key fob, or key card, having multiple options is a great feature for most owners. Continue reading for steps on how to add keys from the mobile app of your Tesla.
Adding Keys from the Mobile App
If you’re the owner of the vehicle, then you have the authority to pair a new key using the Tesla mobile app. Adding keys from the app can be helpful in the event that you don’t have a working key card or fob. Follow these simple steps:
- Open App: While inside or near the car, open the Tesla mobile app and ensure you’re logged in.
- Add Key Card: In the app, tap Security & Drivers > Add Key Card.
- Scan: Scan your new key card or key fob on the card reader located on either wireless phone charger in your vehicle.
- Done: When the key is paired successfully, the mobile app shows a confirmation message. Tap Done in the app and remove the key card or key fob from the wireless charger.
NOTE: When complete, the key list on the vehicle touchscreen will include the new key. Tap the associated pencil icon to customize the name of the key.
Adding a Phone Key from the Mobile App
Apart from the key card and key fob, you can also follow the steps below to add a phone key to your Tesla:
- App Download: Use your phone’s app store to download the Tesla Mobile app.
- Login: Log in to the mobile app using your Tesla account credentials.
- Pair: While inside or near the vehicle, open the Tesla mobile app and touch Set Up Phone Key on the main screen. Alternatively, navigate to Security > Set Up Phone Key.
- Last Steps: Follow the prompts on the mobile app and vehicle touchscreen to set up your phone key.
