One of the more convenient aspects of Tesla ownership is that you have options for the different keys for the car. Whether it’s a phone key, key fob, or key card, having multiple options is a great feature for most owners. Continue reading for steps on how to add keys from the touchscreen of your Tesla.

Adding Keys from the Touchscreen

So long as you already have a key card or key fob that is already paired with your car, you can pair a new key using the touchscreen. When in your vehicle, follow these steps:

  1. Controls: When in your car, tap Controls > Locks > Keys > Add Key.
  2. Scan: Scan your new key card or key fob on the card reader located on either wireless phone charger. When you hire a chime, that means it has been recognized.
  3. Confirm: Scan a key card or key fob that has already been paired to the vehicle to confirm the new key pairing.
  4. Complete: When complete, the key list includes the new key. Touch the associated pencil icon to customize the name of the key.

Adding a Phone Key

Apart from the key card and key fob, you can also follow the steps below to add a phone key to your Tesla:

  1. App Download: Use your phone’s app store to download the Tesla Mobile app.
  2. Login: Log in to the mobile app using your Tesla account credentials.
  3. Pair: While inside or near the vehicle, open the Tesla mobile app and touch Set Up Phone Key on the main screen. Alternatively, navigate to Security > Set Up Phone Key.
  4. Last Steps: Follow the prompts on the mobile app and vehicle touchscreen to set up your phone key.
