The Tesla App is an essential part of the ownership experience. It’s a tool that can be used to start the car, lock or unlock it, see vehicle information, and so much more. If you’re lucky enough to get a Tesla new or used, or have access to more than one on a regular basis, then you’ll want to add it to the app for your convenience. Continue reading for steps on how to add another vehicle to the Tesla app.

Adding a Vehicle

The method of adding the vehicle depends on how you got the car in the first place. If you purchased it new or used through Tesla directly, then the vehicle will automatically be added to the app when you take delivery.

NOTE: You must have a Tesla account to use the app. You can easily make one from the login page on their site or through the app itself.

If you’re purchasing through a private sale, then you’ll have to ask the previous owner to transfer the vehicle to you directly through Tesla. We have created a detailed guide for your convenience. Both parties will receive a confirmation email once the process is complete.

Lastly, if you purchased the car through a third party, then you’ll need to claim ownership of the vehicle. To do this, you must have access to Wi-Fi and the car itself, and then:

  1. Open the Tesla app, and tap the top-left corner to open the product dropdown.
  2. Touch Add Product and then follow the prompts.
  3. You’ll be required to enter the vehicle identification number (VIN), as well as to upload documents and submit owner information to claim ownership.
  4. Once steps 1-3 are complete, it’ll take three to five days for the car to be added to the app.

Removing a Vehicle

Now that you know how to add a car, it’s important to know the steps to remove one too. This is usually done when you no longer own the vehicle, or stop consistently using one that you had access to. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Open the Tesla app, tap the top-right corner and hit My Products.
  2. Next, tap the car you’d like to remove and then touch Remove or Transfer Ownership
  3. Lastly, follow the prompts.

NOTE: Removing a Tesla from your account will end all paid subscriptions for that car, and will also remove any incentives earned or held by the original vehicle owner. These cannot be restored once it’s been done.

The Bottom Line

The steps on how to add another vehicle to the Tesla app are easy. It will vary slightly based on where you got the car from. For example, if it’s direct from Tesla, then it’ll automatically be added. However, if it’s from a private sale or third party, then the process is a bit different, and all the steps are listed above.
