How to Add a Phone Key to Your Tesla

Most traditional car ownership experiences consist of carrying keys around wherever you go. While this is the norm, there are certain automakers that are transitioning to other options, like using your phone as a key. This can be quite convenient, as it saves you from having to carry around a fob for your vehicle. Continue reading for steps on how to add a phone key to your Tesla.

Before Adding a Phone Key

You can use a phone to access your Tesla after you add it as a key. Before you begin pairing your device with your car, ensure the following:

  • Bluetooth: Have Bluetooth enabled in your phone’s settings. Moreover, download the Tesla app, and ensure you enable Bluetooth within the app as well. To check on your phone, go to Settings > Tesla Mobile App > Toggle Bluetooth ON.
  • Location: Have access to your location enabled. When on the Tesla mobile app, select Location > Always. For the best experience, keep the mobile app running in the background.
  • Mobile Access: Ensure Mobile Access is enabled within the car itself. To do this, hit Controls > Safety > Allow Mobile Access when in your Tesla.

Adding a Phone Key

Follow the steps below to add a phone key to your Tesla:

  1. App Download: Use your phone’s app store to download the Tesla Mobile app.
  2. Login: Log in to the mobile app using your Tesla account credentials.
  3. Pair: While inside or near the vehicle, open the Tesla mobile app and touch Set Up Phone Key on the main screen. Alternatively, navigate to Security > Set Up Phone Key.
  4. Last Steps: Follow the prompts on the mobile app and vehicle touchscreen to set up your phone key.
