Tesla vehicles are known to be extremely secure, and have a reputation for being some of the least stolen vehicles on the road. This is largely due to major security features like Sentry Mode and Dashcam. However, several smaller capabilities add to this too, like the Walk-Away Door Lock feature. Continue reading for steps on how to enable Walk-Away Door Lock for your Tesla.

Walk-Away Door Lock

This feature enables the car to automatically lock when you walk away carrying your phone key or paired key fob. It’s a common quality-of-life upgrade that many vehicles have, but it adds to the overall keyless experience if you’re using your phone to get in and out of your Tesla.

NOTE: The Walk-Away Door Lock capability only works with key fobs ordered after approximately October 1, 2019.

You can toggle it on and off from within your car by using the touchscreen and hitting Controls > Locks > Walk-Away Door Lock. As mentioned above, this capability, in combination with features like Sentry Mode and Dashcam, helps create a seamless security experience for Tesla owners.

Preferences for Walk-Away Door Lock

When the doors lock, the exterior lights flash and the mirrors will fold, if you have the Fold Mirrors toggle turned on. Additionally, you can choose to hear a chime play when your Tesla successfully has locked the car. This can be done by tapping Controls > Locks > Lock Confirmation Sound.

NOTE: This confirmation noise can be customized by touching Toybox > Boombox > Lock Sound.

Lastly, there may be times that your Tesla won’t automatically lock, these include:

  • You enable the Exclude Home option when setting up the Walk-Away Door Lock feature.
  • A phone key or paired key fob is detected inside the vehicle, or if the Bluetooth is turned off on your phone.
  • A door or trunk is left open or isn’t fully closed.
  • The driver doesn’t use the driver door to exit the car.

The Bottom Line

The steps on how to enable Walk-Away Door Lock are easy. When in your Tesla, use the touchscreen to tap Controls > Locks > Walk-Away Door Lock. You can toggle additional settings such as Fold Mirrors so that they fold in when the car locks, as well as Confirmation Sound so that you always hear a chime when done. You can also exclude Home if you’d like. Once that’s all complete, your Tesla will automatically lock when you walk away carrying your phone or paired key fob.
