The introduction of the Cybertruck allows Tesla owners to experience the perks of light truck ownership. Whether it’s transporting things in the cargo bed, or taking advantage of the 240V power outlet while on a camping trip, there’s a ton of value this vehicle provides. Another key element is being able to tow a trailer. Continue reading for steps on how to activate Trailer Mode for the Tesla Cybertruck.

Activating Trailer Mode

Trailer Mode must always be active when towing a trailer with your Cybertruck. When setting one up, part of the process is to electrically connect the trailer to the car. When doing so, Trailer Mode will automatically engage. Additionally, it’ll disengage once the connection is removed.

There may be times when you want to enter in or out of Trailer Mode manually. This can be done using the touchscreen in the car, by tapping Controls > Towing & Hauling > Trailer Mode. One of three indicators will display on the touchscreen once in Trailer Mode:

  • Blue Trailer Symbol: This indicates that Trailer Mode is active and all systems are running smoothly.
  • Yellow Trailer Symbol: Your Cybertruck detects a connection for trailer lights, but Trailer Mode is disabled. It’s possible that a carrying accessory has been connected in this scenario.
  • Red Trailer Symbol: A faulty electrical connection has been detected for the trailer lights. Additionally, it could also mean that some, or all trailer lights may not be functioning. In this scenario, pull over as soon as it’s safe to do so and inspect the trailer lights.

Things You Should Know

When Trailer Mode is enabled, some Autopilot features that use the rear camera may be unavailable. Additionally, the following features could operate differently:

  • Safety Features: For Automatic Emergency Braking, the force of braking is decreased significantly. Also, side collision warnings are active, but automatic steering interventions are disabled.
  • Suspension: The air suspension system won’t make adjustments from Medium to Low based on speed. Moreover, it doesn’t automatically raise ride height based on saved locations.
  • Autopilot Features: Lastly, Autosteer won’t be available, and Traffic-Aware Cruise Control will increase the following distance from the car in front of you.

The Bottom Line

The steps on how to activate Trailer Mode for the Tesla Cybertruck are easy. If you’ve attached a trailer and already made the electrical connection, then Trailer Mode will automatically be engaged. If this connection is removed, it will disengage. You can also manually enter in and out of this setting by tapping Controls > Towing & Hauling > Trailer Mode by using the touchscreen in your car.
