The Tesla Cybertruck is truly a one-of-a-kind vehicle, as no other car on the road has had a similar build before. Of course, when something has such an out-of-the-box design, it typically has unique features as well. One of these elements that Tesla as a company likes to promote is steer by wire. So, how does the Tesla Cybertruck steer by wire work? Continue reading for more.

Cybertruck Steering Wheel Features

The truck features a steering wheel that amalgamates the design of both the yoke and round styles. Its height can be adjusted by tapping Controls and touching the Steering icon. You can then follow the on-screen instructions, which simply gets you to use the left scroll wheel to adjust height, tilt, and how close it is to you.

There are several buttons on the steering wheel also. On the left side, you’ll see a button for the right and left turn signals, and one for the high beam headlights. See the visual provided by Tesla for your convenience. On the right side, there’s a button that opens the camera views, as well as one to engage the wipers. Lastly, there’s a button for voice commands, as well as a cruise control indicator. Tesla has also provided a great image that shows these buttons for your ease.

NOTE: The left scroll button has several functions as well. For example, if media is being played, you can push it in the center to pause it, or to the right or left to skip or go to the previous media. Lastly, you can scroll up and down to either raise or lower the volume.

What is Steer by Wire?

Now that we’ve gone over the steering wheel basics, let’s go over steer by wire, as defined by Tesla themselves. They state that the Cybertruck uses this new technology, which means that there’s no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels of the car itself.

Instead, sensors in the steering column can intelligently communicate with the steering racks. This is accomplished electronically. In short, this allows for the Cybertruck steering to feel more responsive and less effort will be required from the driver.

NOTE: The truck also has four-wheel steering, which means that when you turn the steering wheel, all four wheels will respond. This will provide a tighter turning radius, which is especially helpful when driving a larger vehicle such as a truck. Many early adaptors or testers of the Cybertruck rave about this feature, mentioning how it’s had the best handling out of any comparable truck they’ve driven.

The Bottom Line

How does the Tesla Cybertruck steer by wire work? The car uses new technology to ensure there’s no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels of the vehicle itself. This provides a more responsive steering experience with less effort required from the driver. Lastly, thanks to the car’s four-wheel steering system, the truck has a tighter turning radius, making the overall steering of the vehicle excellent.
