Continue for steps on how to add a key card to your Tesla.

Adding a Key Card from the Touchscreen

So long as you already have a key card or key fob that is already paired with your car, you can pair a new card using the touchscreen. When in your vehicle, follow these steps:

  1. Controls: When in your car, tap Controls > Locks > Keys > Add Key.
  2. Scan: Scan your new key card on the card reader located on either wireless phone charger. When you hear a chime, that means it has been recognized.
  3. Confirm: Scan a key card that has already been paired to the vehicle to confirm the new key pairing.
  4. Complete: When complete, the key list includes the new key. Touch the associated pencil icon to customize the name of the key.

Adding a Key Card from the Mobile App

If you’re the owner of the vehicle, then you have the authority to pair a new key using the Tesla mobile app. Adding keys from the app can be helpful in the event that you don’t have a working key card. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Open App: While inside or near the car, open the Tesla mobile app and ensure you’re logged in.
  2. Add Key Card: In the app, tap Security & Drivers > Add Key Card.
  3. Scan: Scan your new key card on the card reader located on either wireless phone charger in your vehicle.
  4. Done: When the key is paired successfully, the mobile app shows a confirmation message. Tap Done in the app and remove the key card or key fob from the wireless charger.

NOTE: When complete, the key list on the vehicle touchscreen will include the new key. Tap the associated pencil icon to customize the name of the key.
