One of the benefits of Tesla ownership is having several options for your car when it comes to keys. These include the mobile key, key fob, and key card. Even better, you can have several phone keys linked to one vehicle, which is incredibly convenient when there are multiple drivers for your Tesla. With there being so many keys, it’s important to know how to manage them. Continue reading for steps on how to manage keys in your Tesla.
Managing Keys
To display a list of all keys that can access your Tesla, tap Controls > Locks when in your car. An icon will display next to each key to indicate whether the key is a phone key, key card, or key fob. This is the list that any Tesla owner should use to manage their keys.
NOTE: Most vehicles should support up to 19 keys at a time across the three available types. Once you’ve reached this limit, you’re required to delete a key before adding a new one.
Lastly, you can pair a key card or key fob to multiple Tesla cars. This is quite convenient, as it prevents you from having to deal with multiple keys when you switch vehicles. Pairing one of these two enables you to access the Tesla and enable driving.
Key Considerations
When you pair a key fob with your Tesla, you can use it for passive entry and can also remotely unlock the doors, open the trunk as well as the front trunk. Moreover, if you pair a key fob with multiple vehicles, you can only use passive entry, remote unlock, and open with one car at a time. You can choose the vehicle you want to passively enter or remotely unlock or open by touching the flat side of the key fob against the card reader on the driver’s side door pillar.
NOTE: If you customize the name of a paired key card or fob on one vehicle, by touching the pencil icon, any other car to which the key card or fob is authenticated also displays the changed name.
The Bottom Line
The steps on how to manage keys in your Tesla are simple. When in your car, tap Controls > Locks and you can see the complete list of keys associated with your vehicle. Your Tesla supports up to 19 keys at a time, and when this limit is reached, a key must be deleted before a new one is added.
