The Tesla Cybertruck has the potential to be the first truck for many potential vehicle owners, which means they’ll get to experience exciting benefits like being able to tow a trailer. However, they may also experience some malfunctions that are unique to truck ownership, such as issues with the tonneau cover. Continue reading for steps on how to troubleshoot the tonneau cover for the Tesla Cybertruck.
Reasons Why the Tonneau Cover May Not Close
A tonneau cover is designed to cover the truck bed of your car. There are several reasons why it may not open or close in certain situations, which include:
- Obstruction: If there’s an obstacle blocking the tonneau cover, it will not close. It’s designed to stop moving if it detects an object in its way, however Tesla warns that this shouldn’t be relied on to prevent damage or injury.
- Low Voltage Power: In the uncommon, but not impossible, scenario that your Cybertruck has no low voltage power, the tonneau cover won’t be able to open or close. In this case, you’ll have to follow specific steps to jump-start the vehicle, which Tesla has a guide for.
- Gear the Car is in: While this one is simple, many drivers can forget. If your car isn’t in Park, then the tonneau cover can’t be open or closed.
NOTE: The tonneau cover will lock into place, whether it’s open or closed, when the Walk-Away Door Lock is enabled.
Troubleshooting the Tonneau Cover
If for some reason your car’s tonneau cover refuses to close or open, try some of the following troubleshooting steps:
- Gear the Car is in: Ensure that the vehicle is unlocked and in Park. If it doesn’t immediately work, wait several minutes and try again.
- Obstruction: Inspect the tracks to ensure there’s no debris or objects in the way that obstructs the tonneau cover.
- Automatic Calibration: When in your Cybertruck, touch the Calibrate button on the touchscreen and follow the onscreen instructions. This button will appear automatically when the tonneau cover needs to be calibrated.
- Manual Calibration: Alternatively, you can press and hold the Open button until the cover is fully open and wait for it to stall. Then press and hold the Close button until the cover is fully closed and stalled. This is a way to manually calibrate it. Tesla has a usual visual of both buttons for your reference.
If all else fails, you’ll need to schedule an appointment with Tesla Service. Lucky for you, we’ve created a detailed guide on how to schedule a Tesla Service appointment.
The Bottom Line
The guidelines on how to troubleshoot the tonneau cover for the Tesla Cybertruck are simple. First, ensure the vehicle is in Park, and that there are no obstructions halting it from opening or closing. If that doesn’t work, try an automatic or manual calibration using the details above. Unfortunately, if all those options fail, then you’ll need to schedule a service appointment.
