If you live in a household with multiple people who frequently drive your Tesla, then it can be annoying if they’re solely relying on the key card or fob for access to the car. Lucky for you, Tesla allows owners to add drivers to the vehicle, which means those people can use the Tesla app and their phone as the key. Continue for steps on how to add drivers to your Tesla through the app.

How to Add Drivers

As mentioned at the top, the Tesla app can be used to add or remove permissions for additional drivers. Once a driver is added, they will have access to most Tesla app features. However, they won’t be able to add or remove drivers, manage payment methods, purchase upgrades, and view charging history.

In addition to the standard features such as preconditioning the car and Sentry Mode, they’ll be able to have vehicle access, schedule servicing, view in-app messages, call for roadside assistance, and view information about the car.

NOTE: New drivers will need to download the Tesla app and create an Account before their profile can be added to your vehicle. You can add up to five drivers per vehicle.

Follow these simple steps to add a driver to your Tesla:

Open the Tesla app and then select the vehicle you’d like to add a driver to. If you only have one Tesla, then it’ll default to it.
Tap Security & Drivers > Manage Drivers.
Follow the on-screen prompts to send an invitation to the driver you want to add.

How to Remove Drivers

You can also remove access if an individual no longer drives your car that often. This can be done by:

Opening the Tesla app and then selecting the vehicle you’d like to remove a driver from. If you only have one Tesla, then it’ll default to it.
Tap Security & Drivers > Manage Drivers.
Find the driver you’d like to remove access for, and tap Remove next to their name. Lastly, hit Yes to confirm the removal.

If you’re not the owner of the car, you can remove your own driver access by selecting the car and tapping Remove Access at the bottom of the screen.

The Bottom Line

The steps on how to add drivers to your Tesla through the app are easy. When you open the app, hit Security & Drivers and then tap Manage Drivers. You can then follow the prompts on-screen to send an invitation to the driver you’d like to add.
