When making the switch from a gas-powered car to an electric vehicle (EV), it may feel odd that there’s no engine under the hood. Whenever you open the front of a gas-powered car, it can be overwhelming with how many different compartments there are. However, for EVs, it’s often a front trunk (frunk) and maybe a few other minor things. With Tesla’s being so unique and having its own method for everything, I always wondered what the procedure to top up the windshield washer fluid was. Continue for steps on how to top up the windshield washer fluid in a Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.
Where is the Washer Fluid Reservoir?
When the washer fluid is low in your Tesla, you’ll see a message on the touchscreen prompting you to refill. The windshield washer fluid reservoir is located behind the frunk, see Tesla’s visual for reference. There’s clear labelling on the cap as well to make it easier to identify.
NOTE: The reservoir has a capacity of 3.2 litres for the Model 3 and 4.5 litres for the Model Y. Ensure you’re using washer fluid meant only for automotive vehicles. Failure to do so may result in bacterial growth within the climate control system which can lead to odours or potential damage that’s not covered by warranty.
IMPORTANT: Some national or local regulations restrict the use of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOCs are commonly used as antifreeze in washer fluid. Tesla advises using a washer fluid with limited VOC content if it’s not too cold. However, if in temperatures below 4 degrees Celsius then it’s a good idea to use one with antifreeze if allowed by local regulations.
Topping Up the Windshield Washer Fluid
Follow these simple steps to top up the washer fluid:
- Park your car in a safe space, then open the frunk.
- Clean around the filler cap before opening it to prevent any dirt from entering the reservoir, then open the filler cap.
- While avoiding spilling, fill the reservoir until the fluid level is visible just below the filler neck. If you’re worried about spillage, then use a funnel.
- Wipe any spills immediately and wash the affected area with water. Lastly, reinstall the filler cap, and close the frunk.
NOTE: Windshield washer fluid can irritate eyes and skin. Read and observe instructions provided by the manufacturer prior to doing anything.
